Into the Unknown...

Two weeks into being a freelance marketing consultant, and I’m taking a moment to gather my thoughts. And my gratitude. As I finished in my last role, I wanted to make sure the next move was something that not only was long-term, but that gave the quality of life which is so important in our current situation. It feels like there’s been a real shift in how we can do our best work, and get a work-life balance. I have always wanted to enter the freelance world of marketing, communications, project management, and everything else that brings, but found the thought as scary as it was exciting.

But I have to say, I’ve been blown away. Not only by how much I’ve loved creating my own brand, as well as posts and content that I hope get across what I’m about, but also by people that seem to have gone out of their way to help and support. I’m sure this would have happened anyway, but maybe it’s our new world that has prompted people to be extra kind – so definitely a positive to come out of this sh*tshow.

I’ve decided to break down my thoughts on braving a new venture into four areas:

Taking the leap into freelance marketing

As mentioned, taking this step didn’t come easily or naturally. But suddenly, it seemed like the right thing. The only thing. I went in expecting nothing and within a few days was meeting a few different people and companies that work in varied and interesting areas. Actually securing work, being excited to get stuck in whenever and wherever possible and….it doesn’t feel like work. It’s scary, it might all dry up. But for now, it feels like all my dreams have come true and it’s where I’m meant to be. At first I thought I'd just target Wigan or St. Helens and keep it local...but that's not how it's turned out! North west, and national - it's all happening.

So, I’d encourage anyone to try it. If it doesn’t work, there are other options out there. It's a good time to experiment.

Clients

I’ve met some amazing people so far. Entrepreneurs, those that have been at this for a long time, ex colleagues, someone that’s been referred to me from kind friends. It’s so exciting! I’ve got loads of meetings over the next week to work out details and I’d say to anyone – those who you’ve helped want to help you – see below. I am chomping at the bit to move forward and make real progress on ideas and strategy over the coming days, so watch this space.

Help from my friends

I’ve reached out to so many people this past week. Friends (sometimes just a chat with those I saw every day for 11 years and want to reconnect with); people I respect so much generally to talk about work; for quotes and pearls of wisdom to add to my social media, discussing things I need to polish up on, general support and morale boosting, and some favours that I didn’t even ask for, but that people have offered. SEO plans, money-saving print ideas, navigating HMRC, tutorials over the phone at 8am on things I kind of know, but need to develop some extra skills. I am blown away. I guess you reap what you sow and I’ve prided myself on always helping others where they need it. Hopefully I have.

I’ve had some moments of doubt too and some tricky parts. How could you not? But it’s all part of the process.

It’s all about the money (or at least understanding how to bank it)

A bit like algebra, I’ve never wanted to understand it. Tax returns, ‘LTD company’ or ‘self-employed’, pensions… I did the equivalent of putting my fingers in my ears and singing. Then last weekend, I sat, took a deep breath and read. And read and read. Downloaded some apps. Low and behold, I actually geeked out. In the way only someone can do that’s avoided something forever and then has a lightbulb moment, equalling in such satisfaction that they’re a bit hyper. Hopefully now I’ll add to that pension!

I feel like I’ve learned so much in the past two weeks. New platforms, finance, direction, faith, and mostly…the kindness of people. Long may it continue. Thanks to everyone so far x
